Who is John Rowles?

Biasanya ABG akan mengidolakan seseorang lawan jenis yang menurutnya begitu "sempurna" (paras, postur tubuh, otak atau pendidikan, keterampilan, cata berpakaian, "manners" termasuk cara bicara, cara memperlakukan orang lain, dsb,dsb). Tak terkecuali saya.

Ketika saya ABG, sekitar tahun 1970, masih duduk di bangku SMP kelas 3, entah siapa yang membawa atau membeli, tiba-tiba saja di rumah ada Piringan Hitam bersampul gambar seorang pemuda dengan wajah Caucasian lengkap dengan jas dan dasi, membuat pemuda yang tanpa senyum itu tampak serius tetapi, at the same time, memperlihatkan "gantengnya".





Maklum, saya kan anak kampung, jadi lihat orang berwajah agak sedikit "istimewa" aja, lain dari orang di sekitar saya, sudah bisa membuat saya terkagum-kagum! Wah, norak banget deh! (Kebayang engga sih, bahwa saya yang buruk-rupa ini selalu mengagumi orang lain yang berparas cantik atau good-looking?) hehehe....

Jadi hal utama yang membuat saya kagum sama si John ini adalah profil wajahnya, kemudian tentu saja suaranya yang "maco" abis! (Norak lagi nih!)

Ternyata dia bernama "John Rowles". Lagunya ada beberapa, tapi judul lagu "If I Only Had Time" mengundang ketertarikan saya untuk segera mendnegarkan lagu tersebut... Saya putar tanpa ragu. Suara senandung yang dilantunkan penyanyi ini di awal lagu, sudah terdengar begitu mendayu dan enak di telinga.

Sambil saya dengar irama dan liriknya, saya perhatikan wajahnya yang ada di dampul piringan hitam misterius itu. Kok, tampaknya engga Caucasian banget sih...
Belakangan saya baru tahu bahwa dia berasal dari New Zealand. Lahir di Whakatane dan dibesarkan di Kawerau, di Bay Of Plenty, tanggal 26 Maret 1947 dari bapak Eddie Hohapata Rowles dan ibu, bernama Phyllis Pakeha. Dari nama mereka, kita juga tahu bahwa ayah ibunya punya darah Maori (penduduk asli New Zealand)





John memiliki 5 saudara perempuan Georgina, Carol, Gabrielle, Cheryl and Tania. Cheryl dan Tania menjadi judul lagu yang dinyanyikannya. Dia juga mempunyai 2 saudara laki-laki, Edward and Wally. Malang, Edward meninggal ketika Jouhn baru berusia 2 tahyn, dan sebagai tanda penghormatan kepada Edward, John memakai nama adiknya itu sebagai nama tengahnya.

Sang ayah yang memang juga sangat berbakat dalam bidang tarik suara dengan group musiknya "All Black's" tahun 1938, adalah pendorong utama John dalam karirnya sejak pemuda itu masih belia.

Ketika berusia 15 tahun, 1962, John putus sekolah, dan mulai bekerja di camp kehutanan, tetapi musik adalah bagian yang terpenting bagi hidupnya, maka ia pun berhenti bekerja dan tahun 1963 bersama bapaknya, ia hijrah ke Australia untuk mendapatkan kesempatan mengembangkan karir menyanyi lebih luas lagi.

Tahun 1966, tahun yang sangat "berpetuah" buat dia karena ada seorang promotor Graham Dent mulai "merombak" penampilan John, dari gaya rambut, pakaian, dsb, hingga ia bisa ditampilkan dalam acara televisi Australia tahun 1966 itu.

Tahun 1967 ia ke Inggris dan bertemu seorang produser rekaman, Mark Leander. Ketika itu Inggris sudah memiliki Engelbert Humperdinck dan Tom Jones yang sedang berada di puncak. Dengan seksama Mike meilih beberapa lagu untuk dinyanyikan John dnegan harapan bisa mengalahkan, atau setidaknya menyamai ketenaran Engelbert dan Tom Jones.

Lagu yang dipilihkannya adalah If I Only Had Time dan Now Is The Hour yang langsung saja menyedot perhatian publik, bukan hanya di Inggris tetapi juga di negara Eropa lainnya, New Zealand, Australia, dan negara-negara Asia, termasuk Indonesia.

Album keduanya, "Hush, Not A Word to Marie" dan hampir menyamai kepopuleran yang pertama.




Setahun kemudian ia kembali ke New Zealand dan terus berkarir. Salah satu albumnya "Cheryl Moana Marie" (nama adiknya yang menjadi inspirasi saat itu. Juga meledak di pasaran. Karirnya mendapat beberapa penghargaan di negara kelahirannya itu.





Tahun 1980, ia mendapat kehormatan untuk menyanyi di hadapan Ratu Elizabeth II dan the Duke Of Edinburgh ketika mereka berkunjung ke Auckland, New Zealand.





Walau semakin bertambah usia, tetapi masih tetap terlihat bekas-bekas garis gantengnya, karirnya terus berlanjut, namun tahun 2009 ini, dia merasa sudah terlalu lelah dan memutuskan untuk berhenti manggung. Nyanyi sih jalan terus ... buat keluarga.

Dengar-dengar, ia memiliki serangkaian pulau kecil di China. (Pantes dong, udah berkarir sekian lama!)
